Creating 21st Century Faith Formation that Engages All Ages and Generations
Faith formation today requires new models, approaches, and technologies that are specifically designed for a 21st century world and the diverse religious and spiritual needs of people and communities. This workshop presents a 21st century model of lifelong faith formation and a variety of strategies, resources, and technologies to bring the model to life in a congregation. An abundance of religious content and experiences are now available to every congregation-print, audio, video, and online-making it possible to provide faith formation for all ages and and all generations, 24/7, every day of the year. In order to make this vision a reality, the role of faith formation leaders is shifting from providing religious content and programming to curating religious content and experiences for all ages and making it available to people.

Unchaining Confirmation
Given all we know about adolescents, catechesis, and youth ministry, how might we enhance Confirmation's potential to be a more formative experience  (without changing the age or length of your program.) This session will NOT focus on the practical, but will discuss the merits of six or eight enhancements that may be possible.

Sponsored by: OSV Curriculum Division

  205    Special Needs

Joellyn Cicciarelli and  David Rizzo
Take This All of You and Eat of It: Helping Children with Autism and Special Needs Prepare to Receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Penance

Please join us to learn innovative ideas that help children with autism and special needs prepare to celebrate their first Holy Communion and Reconciliation. An adaptive first Eucharist preparation kit will be described and attendees will come away with effective, practical ideas and handouts to help them prepare children with special needs to enter more fully into their faith through the celebration of two important sacraments.

206    Adult Faith Formation
Pam Coster
Adult Faith Formation Resources:  Share the Wealth!

Share your AFF successes and enrich the ministry for us all! This session will be a "resource swap" and discussion. Bring a book or other resource (print or electronic) that has worked well with adults in your ministry and a one paragraph "resource review". We will swap reviews, and share successes, with plenty of time for discussion about the opportunities and challenges in adult faith formation. You will go home with new resources, a new network of AFF professionals and many new ideas!

207    Technology
Jonathan Sullivan
Resistance is Futile: The Catechetical Benefits of Being Assimilated by the Digital Culture

In this learning session Jonathan will expand on the theme of his TED-style keynote by asking the question “How is the information revolution changing expectations of catechesis and catechetical leaders?” He will examine five trends in the “digital culture” and how they may help parishes support adult faith formation.

208    Leadership
Ann Garrido
Challenging Conversations: Strategies for Working through Ministerial Conflicts

Do you find yourself stuck in the same disagreements over and over again?  Are you avoiding a situation in the hope that it will just go away?  Come and learn a framework for analyzing the conflicts that pop up in any ministry along with a set of skills to help engage the difficult conversations that need to be had.

209    Family Catechesis
Kathy Hendricks
Garden of Grace: Spiritual Practices for Today's Families
The multiple demands on families today can make the pursuit of spiritual practices seem evasive and even futile. Nevertheless, the home holds great potential for being the rich soil from which a deeply rooted spirituality can bloom and blossom. In this session, we will explore five spiritual practices that are seeded in the family and practical ways to help families incorporate into everyday routines. The cultivation of gratitude, art of storytelling, celebration of ritual, extension of forgiveness, and attentiveness to time create a domestic spirituality abundant in grace and beauty.

210    Multi-cultural
Dr. Hosffman Ospino
Preparing Catechetical Leaders for Ministry in Pluri-Cultural Parishes

Most Catholics in the United States celebrate our faith in the context of parish life. The parish is like a second home, a place where we share one faith, one Lord, one baptism. But how to foster that same experience one Catholic parish becomes home to different cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religious experiences? How to catechize in the midst of these circumstances? According to a recent study in the year 2011, approximately 38% of all parishes in the United States are classified as multicultural. This percentage most likely will increase in the upcoming years. It falls upon catechetical and other pastoral leaders to fully understand the reality of these communities, identify the dynamics of sharing faith in a pluri-cultural parish, and propose a vision of unity in the midst of diversity. In this workshop we will lay the foundations for this important conversation.

Learning and Teaching in Multiple Ways

Modern catechetical textbooks provide ample activities for learning and teaching in multiple ways. We will explore some of them in light of the doctrinal content they want to impart. Do they enhance or restrain genuine learning?

212    Scripture
Brian Singer-Towns, MThS
The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church

Pope Benedict XVI’s most recent Apostolic Exhortation, Verbum Domini (The Word of the Lord), is the most significant ecclesial document on Scripture since Dei Verbum. This workshop will review the exhortation’s major themes with an emphasis on the implication for catechetical ministry. Time will be provided for participants to discuss the document and its potential impact on their ministry.
