Learning Session Descriptions

Lupita Vital
Descubrir, Capacitar y Enviar a Líderes Catequéticos

Dallas Carter
Reaching the Multitudes: Effective Content and Viral Concepts
There are many catechetical leaders who have started to use social media as a great way to engage a New Evangelization. The questions remain on how to reach the multitudes. In this session we will discuss the most effective 'traction' and 'retention' techniques to build your own online presence.

504    Leadership
Fr. Bud Kaicher and staff of St. Francis of Assisi, Vista, CA
Working Well with Catholic School Personnel
We will share with participants the journey of our parish staff (school and catechetical staff) to develop a vision for working together effectively as one body sharing parish facilities. After sharing our successes and failures, we will invite participants to share their own successes and failures, and facilitate a period of thinking collectively about how to achieve our common goal of working together to build up the Kingdom of God.

We are six individuals serving the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of San Diego:  the Principal of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, the Pastoral Associates for English and Spanish speaking ministry, the Sacramental Preparation Coordinators for English and Spanish speaking children, the Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult ministry and the Pastor of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. We have worked in the parish for as many as 33 years and as few as one year. We are diverse in age, cultural background, pastoral experience and educational background.  Our parish website is www.stfrancis-vista.org .

505    Theology
Dr. José Antonio Medina, SThD
Our Lady of Guadalupe: A New Interpretation of the Story, Apparitions, and Image
The appearances of Our Lady of Guadalupe coincide with the birth of Hispanic culture in America and the evangelization of the continent. In this session we will make an interpretation of the symbols and signs contained in the Aztec narrative “Nican Mopohua” which means “here is told, is set down in order”. We will also explain why the Guadalupe Tradition among Latinos is so important, especially among the people from Mexico and Central America.

Sponsored by: Liguori Publications

506    Evangelization
Raul and Amparo Navarro & Fr. Julio Domenech
The Diocese and Parish in the Missionary and Pastoral Work of the Church
Ideas will be shared on how dioceses and parishes can accomplish the missionary and pastoral work of the Church in a systematic and organic manner that integrates the elements that the Church describes in the various documents.

Sponsored by Integral System of New Evangelization (SINE)

507    Leadership
Neil Parent
Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership: How the project and related research are challenging our thinking about pastoral ministry and lifelong faith formation
Seismic shifts are occurring within US Catholicism, both institutionally and in membership. This session will explore the nature of these changes and draw implications for staying current and effective in pastoral ministry today.

Sponsored by Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project.

508    Morality Update
Dr. Michael Steier
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizens
"The Church wishes to help form consciences in political life and to stimulate greater insight into the authentic requirements of justice as well as greater readiness to act accordingly" (Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, no. 28). Participants will be introduced to the U.S. Bishops document "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship" via a PowerPoint presentation and some very helpful handouts. This session is particularly designed for parish and diocesan catechetical leaders, catechists and Catholic school teachers as they prepare their various constituencies to live their faith in the public square and protect the lives and dignity of the poor and vulnerable.

509    Technology
National PCL Certification from the Alliance
by Kenneth Gleason, NCCL member of the National Review Certification Committee
