Learning Session Descriptions

401    Diocesan
Dr. Thomas and Rita Walters
Catechetical Leaders: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
The results of the recent 2011 National Survey of Parish Catechetical Leaders conducted by Tom and Rita will be explained.  We will then discuss how the results compare with earlier surveys in an effort to assess the state of catechetical leadership and where it needs to go in the coming years. Participants will be invited to share their reflections on a number of key findings. Survey results are available at:  (http://trresearch.web.officelive.com/2011NationalSurveyofCatecheticalLeaders.aspx)

404    Leadership
José Amaya and Rita Ann Martinez
Recruiting, Retaining and Forming Catechists
In Evangelization in the Modern World, #14, Pope Paul VI affirms that "the Church exists to evangelize".  In this workshop, we will engage participants on the art of motivating members of the parish to become committed catechists in constant formation to be effective disciples and evangelizers proclaiming Christ in the context of the new evangelization. We will share best practices and tools.

405 Media - CANCELLED
Sr. Rose Pacatte, FSP
Vatican II at 50: When the Church turned on television, started going to the movies and went digital; a way forward
Many people think the Church hates the media, but au contraire. This presentation considers Vatican II and how it changed the Church's attitude toward faith, culture, and evangelization and the wonderful teaching that remains the Church's best kept secret. With a little history, some anecdotes, and clips from movies and television, Sister Rose outlines a way forward, beyond mere instrumentalization of media to understanding entertainment and information media within the context of faith formation.

Sponsored by Pauline Books and Media.

406    Theology
Jim Gontis
Top 10 List for Effective and Fruitful Catechesis
This workshop will list and explain 10 practical tips for catechists and catechetical leaders that will assist them in forming their students to become the saints that God calls them (and us) to be.

407    Multi-cultural
Adrián Alberto Herrera
Catechizing on the Quinceañera in the Context of Lifelong Faith Formation
The custom of celebrating the passage from childhood to adolescence is treasured among Hispanics in the United States. How can we properly prepare young people for the ritual? We will look at the Order for the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday and discuss the options available in the rite.

408    Youth
Jack Jezreel
Ten Tips to Make Social Mission Come Alive for Teens
For many youth ministers and youth, the vocabulary of Catholic social teaching and the terrain of social mission are largely unfamiliar; engaging young people can seem daunting.  Come consider ten tips about how to engage youth in a lively and promising way, and bring some of your own best tips to share.

Sponsored by: JustFaith.

409    Morality
Kieran Sawyer
Theology of the Body and Catechesis for Chastity
In 2008 the United States Bishops published Catechetical Formation in Chaste Living, which mandates that children be given chastity education from preschool through grade twelve.  The document provides a clear, easy-to-follow way to present the key concepts of John Paul II’s theology of sexuality to today’s children and teens.  This learning session will offer an overview of the Chaste Living document, will show how it correlates with the Theology of the Body, and will offer ideas on how it can be implemented.

410    Technology
Carson Weber
The Internet and the New Evangelization
Pope Benedict has proclaimed: “Without fear we must set sail on the digital sea!” Numerous conversions to Jesus Christ and his Holy Church have been the direct result of carrying forth the Gospel upon the medium of the Internet. In this session, we will survey several examples of how the Church is presently evangelizing anew upon the digital continent. We will also dive into practical ways you and others can effectively utilize the New Media to carry forth the New Evangelization.

411  White Papers
The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith
The New Evangelization is new not in its content but in its inner thrust, new in ways that are suited to these times and situations, new because it encompasses those who have already received the proclamation of the Gospel. Examine the call to evangelize as Terrie Baldwin shares her insights on “Creating New Witnesses for the New Evangelization.” Reopen the door of faith as Sarah Blauvelt discusses “Porta Fidei and the New Evangelization.” Facilitated by Michael Andrews.
